An adjustable coping saw

This coping saw is adjustable, meaning that it will accommodate different blade lengths and different blade types. This saw is used to cut metals, wood, jewelry and any other materials where you need a tight cut. It is also useful for cutting out holes that are located on the inside of a pattern, etc.

A Scroll Saw

This is a shot of the ultimate whirligig making tool, a powered scroll saw. This one has a tilting work table for cutting angles, an adjustable light, and is a variable speed saw. It is a powered version of the hand held coping saw shown above. It is used to make fine cuts in various materials, and is perfectly suited to cutting out wooden whirligig patterns. At the time of this writing, a saw like this can be bought online or in person from any of the big retail chain stores.

A Jigsaw

basic jigsaw

The jigsaw might also be a valuable tool for cutting out patterns and wooden bases, etc. You cannot cut corners as tight as you would with a scroll saw, but with the right blades, it can be used to cut out plywood patterns, etc. These can be bought online or from any of the large retail chain stores.

A Hand Drill

corded hand drill

A drill will be needed to add holes in your whirligig parts. It can also be used as a power screwdriver if you have the correct driver bits. This is a common tool that you can buy almost anywhere.

A Drill Press

small drill press

A drill press will allow you to accurately drill holes in your whirligig parts. The drill press shown is a bench top unit or can be mounted on a stand. There are also floor mounted drill presses, if you can afford one.

With a drill press you can drill holes more accurately than you would with a hand held drill. The drill press shown will mount on a stand or on a bench top. Available online or in any of the major chain stores.
