When I first decided to build a whirligig, I came across this web page, that showed plans for three different types. I changed a few things, and made up my own drawings so I could build them. Here are the drawings and some of the info that I made in order to build my version of their Woodchopper and WoodSawyer whirligigs.
I am showing a wire link between the figure body and the operating cam. To make this wire link, you can pick up 1/8″ dia rod at Home Depot or Lowes. If you want to have some steel rod delivered, you can get it here. 1/8″ plywood for the tail and prop blades can be found here.
I have added a full scale tracing template/pattern for my version of the man figure here, or shown below, if you need it.
So here is a full scale tracing pattern for my version of the woodchopper or sawyer man figures. I believe you can save the image and print it out. It should print out at approx. 8″ in height. I have shown an axe, but on my patterns page, you can print out the Sawyer version.
